Using Your Logitech Keyboard on Mac: Understanding Command Key Behavior

When it comes to using a Logitech keyboard with your Mac, you may encounter some unexpected behavior when it comes to the command key. This is particularly true if you're using a Logitech K780 Bluetooth keyboard like I am, and have noticed that the modifier keys behave differently after an iMac timeout and re-login.

The Initial Experience

When I first started using my K780 with my 2018 Intel iMac running Monterey 12.0.1, everything seemed to be working as expected. The font and rose-colored design of the keyboard were inviting, and the rounded keys provided a comfortable typing experience. The keyboard was slim and lightweight, making it easy to toss into a backpack or bag when traveling.

The Command Key Conundrum

However, I soon discovered that the command key on my Logitech keyboard was behaving erratically after an iMac timeout and re-login. When I would log back in, the Option key would suddenly act like the command key, and vice versa. This was frustrating, especially since I had set up my keyboard to use the correct modifier keys in System Preferences.

Troubleshooting

To troubleshoot this issue, I checked the Keyboard and Modifier keys settings in System Preferences after re-booting and logging back in after an iMac timeout. Interestingly, the keyboard was still set to 'Bluetooth USB host controller' both times. However, when I would leave the iMac and keyboard on for a while and allow the login to time out again, the behavior would revert back to normal.

The Solution

After some experimentation, I discovered that rebooting my Mac resolved the issue. After a reboot, the command key on my Logitech K780 acted as expected, and the modifier keys behaved as I had set them up in System Preferences.

While using my Logitech keyboard with my Mac has been generally smooth sailing, this issue with the command key behavior after an iMac timeout and re-login was a source of frustration. By rebooting my Mac, I was able to resolve the problem and get back to enjoying the comfortable typing experience that my K780 provides.
